Midtown Elementary School
Midtown Elementary is located on a 16-acre site in the commercial center of the city of Madison, Alabama. The cafeteria, gymnasium, and media center are
arranged in a cluster of architectural shapes fronting the main highway. The location of these spaces, forward of the classroom spaces, reinforces the school’s
role as a community center. Three two-story bar buildings contain classrooms that are organized in six independent pods for grades K-5. The classroom pods
are connected by a “main street” that serves as the central circulation spine of the school. Laboratory spaces for art, music, science, foreign language and other special programs are located along the main street. The spacious interior, with brightly colored finishes, vaulted ceilings, and whimsical curved lights and soffits, reflects the playfulness of the building’s young occupants.
